Hi There!
Welcome to our blog about the trials, tribulations, and rewards that come with eating local. But first a little background info --- we are three second year Dalhousie university students in an International Development class. The entire class was challenged to act upon an issue (be it through fundraising or raising awareness) that is connected to neoliberal globalization and its effects.
The three of us were particularly struck by the issues of food security, and the structured loans given to developing countries that produce agricultural markets aimed at benefiting the developed world rather than providing subsistence to its own surrounding population. After some extensive research, we decided that this was an issue we felt passionately about and something that warranted discussion.
Thus, we have challenged ourselves to eat locally, on a student budget for a week, and document the difficulties and rewards surrounding this action.
By visiting local farmers markets and talking to those around us with experience in this practice we hope to gain valuable information and share it with you via this blog, in order to raise awareness and facilitate the local eating of other people in the Halifax area, as well as raising awareness to the injustices being done in the global food market.
So we hope you enjoy! Please post with restaurant or store recommendations and with your thoughts and own experiences!
Thanks,
Rebecca, Irene, and Jackson
